The Big bill has passed both chambers of Congress and is being sent to the President for his signature. From the perspective of the U.S. Catholic bishops’ conference, the bill unfortunately:

  • provides tax breaks for some while undermining the social safety net for others through major cuts to nutrition assistance and Medicaid

  • promotes an enforcement-only approach to immigration and eroding access to legal protections

  • harms God’s creation and future generations through cuts to clean energy incentives and environmental programs


On the positive side:

  • for a year, ends taxpayer subsidies of organizations that perform abortions

  • provides a new tax credit for donations to public and private school scholarships, if states opt in


President Trump is set to visit Iowa tonight to kick off a year-long celebration of our nation’s 250th birthday, “America250.”


Pope: God’s creation is not a battleground for vital resources


Vatican News reports that in his Message for the 10th World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, Pope Leo XIV quotes extensively from Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato si’, denouncing environmental and social injustice and noting that God’s creation is not intended to be a battleground for vital resources
