Free Throw Contest - 2008

The Free Throw contest is the most popular youth activity sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. The competition is open to all boys and girls, ages 10 - 14 as of JANUARY 1st.

All information regarding the contest comes from the SUPREME OFFICE. ALL GRAND KNIGHTS should check with their COUNCIL YOUTH DIRECTORS to see if they have the necessary materials. If not, they should be ordered from the SUPREME OFFICE by NOVEMBER 1st. The form for ordering this kit can be found in the COUNCIL REPORT FORMS BOOKLET. This kit contains promotional posters, entry forms, score sheets, participation certificates, winner certificates and a copy of the OFFICIAL RULES.

There are five levels of competition: (All date are tentative at this time.)

  1. The Local contest should be held by January 27, 2008.
  2. The District at contest should be completed by February 10, 2008.
  3. The Regional competition will be held on February 24, 2008.
  4. The State contest will be held on March 30, 2008.
  5. The Final level of competition is the International contest.

The location of the Regional and State Competitions will be determined at the December State Family Meeting.

All contest sites should have available 2 mens regulation size basketballs and 2 womens regulation size basketballs used by some girls and junior high boys teams. A ball or balls should be designated as the official ball and should be used by all contestants.

Participants will not be allowed to use their own basketball during competition. Please check your official rules as to who can use the smaller ball. All contestants must be present at the designated time and location in order to be considered a participant and/or a winner.

The date for the local contest should be established early and well publicized to assure the best possible turnout.

The District contest dates should also be established early so local winners can be informed of the date, time and place, The District date for competition is the responsibility of the District Deputy. It will also be the responsibility of the District Deputy to send the participation forms of the top two winners in each age gender category to the Regional Contest Director.

After your councils competition, dont forget to fill out your report forms. One (FT-1) is in your Council Report Forms Booklet from Supreme. The second is the Iowa Knights of Columbus Free Throw Report. SEND A COPY OF THESE TO THE STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR in order to receive council participation credit.

NOTE: SUPREME SETS ALL THE RULES ON AGE, AND THE SIZE OF BALL TO BE USED. THE STATE HAS NO CONTROL OVER THESE SUPREME RULES, AND THEREFORE, CANNOT CHANGE THEM.
