Iowa KC Charitable Foundation
At the 2004 Iowa State Council of Knights of Columbus Convention a resolution was submitted by
council #2021 (Estherville) and passed for the Establishment of the Iowa Knights of Columbus Charitable
Foundation to qualify and be operated and amended as allowed under section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal
Revenue Code, thereby allowing donors to make tax-deductible gifts to such a charitable foundation, and
agreed to participate in helping fund the Foundation. The Foundation is made up of 4 Funds —
Unrestricted Fund (General Fund), Helping Hands Fund,
Persons with Intellectual Disabilities Fund, and Vocations and Catholic
Education Fund.

Officers
The officers of the Foundation are, President, Henry Fullick PSD, Vice President Jim Murphy PSD,
Secretary, Robert Murphy PSD and Treasurer, Tom Wittrock PSD. The Board of Directors consists of
all Past State Deputies living in the State of Iowa along with the Iowa State K of C Executive board.

Our Goal
Our goal is to raise $200,000 by the end of this fraternal year. With a small percentage of
Councils participating last year, we had $8500 in the Helping Hand Fund. This amount is available
for individual grants deemed worthy by a Knights of Columbus Council, Assembly or District Deputy.
Grand Knights, Faithful Navigators and District Deputies can request a form to start the process for
a grant by contacting PSD Tom Wittrock at (641) 427-5741, or at 770 310th Street, Bagley, IA 50026-8014.
Sending a check made out to Iowa KC Charitable Foundation and sent to Tom Wittrock to address above can
be made a tax-deductible contributions.
The Foundations first grant request of $300 was granted to the Chad, Carrie and Alec Gotto family of
council #2001 (Farley) to help cover the devastating doctor and hospital bills which keep mounting for
their little son. On August 18, 2006 Alec was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis (TM), a neurological
syndrome caused by inflammation of the spinal cord. TM is uncommon but not rare. Symptoms of TM develop
rapidly over several hours to several weeks. The spinal cord carries motor nerve fibers to the limbs and
trunk and sensory fibers from the body back to the brain. Inflammation within the spinal cord interrupts
these pathways and causes the common presenting symptoms of TM, which include limb weakness, sensory
disturbance, bowel and bladder dysfunction, back pain and radicular pain. This explains why Alec cannot
move his arms or legs. However, he is still able to look around the room for Mom and Dad!

We Need Your Help!
The Iowa K of C’s Charitable Foundation is in need of your help. The Mission Statement of the Foundation
is to ensure permanent funds for Religious Vocations, Catholic Education, Persons with Intellectual
Disabilities, and to help our Brother Knights and other families in Iowa. Fourteen per cent of our
Councils participated last year, which enables us to start granting funds to individuals in need of help.
At a past convention your delegates passed a resolution to establish the Foundation and agreed to
participate in helping fund the Foundation. This is where your Councils and Assemblies can help
and "Make It Happen". We are again asking each Council and Assembly to contribute to the Foundation.
The Board of Directors of the Foundation has established a program that will allow Councils and
Assemblies to earn a certificate during the 2008 & 2009 fraternal years. When a Council or Assembly
donates, a certificate will be earned.
- $3 for each member a gold certificate
- $2 for each member a silver certificate
- $1 for each member a bronze certificate
|
Example: Councils with 100 members who donate $300 will earn a gold certificate. Membership will
be based on the Supreme Roster sent out at the start of the New Year (July Roster) for all members.
